Opera Project Columbus presents Leonard Bernstein’s delightfully irreverent Candide, inspired by Voltaire’s 1759 novella—a whirlwind romp where boundless optimism meets spectacular misfortune. The story follows a wide-eyed young man whose unwavering belief that everything happens for the best is tested by a wildly chaotic world. Devoted to his beloved Cunegonde, Candide—along with her brother Maximilian, the maid Paquette, and their tutor Dr. Pangloss—is grounded in the philosophy that this is the “best of all possible worlds.”
Naturally, chaos ensues. Swept into a rapid succession of misadventures—war, exile, the Inquisition, betrayal, swindling, and shipwreck—Candide is repeatedly torn from his love while clinging (heroically, if naively) to Pangloss’s teachings. With a sparkling, genre-blending score and a witty book by Hugh Wheeler, Candide is a fast-paced, satirical operetta that gleefully skewers blind optimism while celebrating resilience, romance, and the absurd adventure of it all. Buckle up—it’s a bumpy, brilliant ride.
Our performance will be fun, interactive, and an immersive experience that invites audiences right into the heart of the story.
OUR MISSION
We seek out, find, and nurture raw and emerging operatic talent as we reinvent the art form to appeal to contemporary audiences. We also aim to grow and raise the standards of the Central Ohio arts community by infusing it with our unique brand of opera.
OUR DRIVE
Opera singers are not born, they are made – through hours and weeks and years of practice and performance. At Opera Project Columbus, we are working hard to create opportunities for emerging artists from Central Ohio (and beyond) to practice their craft, and for local audiences to reap the benefits.
